"We don’t want you in the dark, friends, about how hard it was when all this came down on us in Asia province. It was so bad we didn’t think we were going to make it. We felt like we’d been sent to death row, that it was all over for us. As it turned out, it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally—not a bad idea since he’s the God who raises the dead! And he did it, rescued us from certain doom. And he’ll do it again, rescuing us as many times as we need rescuing. You and your prayers are part of the rescue operation—I don’t want you in the dark about that either. I can see your faces even now, lifted in praise for God’s deliverance of us, a rescue in which your prayers played such a crucial part." 2 Corinthians 1: 8-11 (MSG)
I remember when I was younger, around the age of 8, I was climbing this tree in my back yard. Now this tree was huge, around a hundred feet in height. Branches scattered around the trunk that made it perfect for climbing. I remember thinking to myself that if I could reach the top, I could see the whole world. So, without asking for my parent's permission, or any supervision, I started to embark on this little mission of mind. Branch by branch I climbed. Heart pounding harder and harder as I got higher and higher. Refusing to look down was of the utmost importance to me. I finally reached the top, and with a long breath of relief, I could see everything! I could see the corn field down the street, the loud dog a few houses down, and the park that was a half mile from my house. I was on top of the world.
And then it happen, the one thing I refused to do. I looked down. The ground seemed forever away! The large branch on the ground was shrunken. Every thing was so little down below. Getting down was something I forgot to know how to do. "If I could just stay at the top of this tree everything will be alright. I don't have to come down." I thought to myself. But how could I stay atop the tree, and live. So I decided to cry for help.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!"
He came rushing out the house searching for me, and then he found me in the tree clinching for dear life. I remember the first thing he did was try to calm me down. I did just that, and I got my breathing under control. I still couldn't move though. Fear had taken over every inch of my body. My dad had decided to climb up the tree and get me himself. And needless to say, he succeeded. I was on the ground shortly after that.
Our Christian walk is much like this. We get on spiritual highs. After awesome worship, or deep prayer time, or helping a homeless person get a meal we are on spiritual highs. That stuff makes us feel good as followers of Jesus, and it should. But that's when Satan attacks us harder. Satan likes to attack us when we lease expect it. Those are moments when we don't think he will attack, our spiritual highs. We feel like we are on top of the world, much like when I was 8, I was on top of the world, and then Satan puts something in our lives to get us to fear, or to fall.
However, we have Christ as our rescuer. Christ isn't the savior who will watch you save yourself, or command you the steps to save yourself. Christ is the savior who will get in the tree with you to save you. He will get in the mud with you. He will be right by your side, when you are weeping, or hurting. Christ will weep with you, he will hurt with you. Christ loves us that much. He feels for us. He knows our pains. He knows our struggles.
When we feel like we are on top of the world, and we refuse to look down because everything on top is so much better, that's when we become weak. As followers of Christ we have to be humble in the way we do things. We have to recognize where we come from, and remember it, so that we don't get knocked back to that level. There are times when we will fail, but there's nothing God plans for us that will be too much to bear.
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." 1 Corinthians 10:13
God will not push us over our limit. God will push us enough to make us stronger. God will rescue us when we do fail, so that we have the opportunity to learn from those failures. Therefore, God is a God of rescuing.
In conclusion, Thomas Edison once said, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." We will be given tests and trials that sometimes we will fail to pass. Remember that giving up is something we cannot do. Giving up is something we must not do.God will always be there when we need rescuing. Its on us to acknowledge him for help. It's on us to call on him when we need saving. Just like Paul said in 2 Corinthians God will save us again and again. I pray that he saves you. God is a God of rescuing.
God Bless You!
